Clean Monday: Flying Kites and Welcoming Lent in Greece

As winter fades and the first signs of spring begin to appear, Greece celebrates Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera), a day that marks the beginning of Lent and is deeply rooted in tradition. It is a day of renewal, cleansing, and joyful outdoor gatherings, setting the tone for the 40-day fasting period leading up to Easter.

Clean Monday falls on the first day of Great Lent in the Orthodox Christian calendar, typically seven weeks before Easter Sunday. It is called “clean” because it symbolizes spiritual and physical purification, a fresh start after the indulgences of Carnival (Apokries). Families refrain from consuming meat and dairy products, following the traditional Lenten diet of seafood, vegetables, legumes, and unleavened bread.

One of the most picturesque customs associated with Clean Monday is kite flying. On this day, the sky over Greece fills with colorful kites as families head to parks, hills, and beaches to take part in this joyful activity. The tradition is believed to represent the soul’s journey towards purification and closeness to the divine. The higher the kite soars, the better the wishes for the coming period of spiritual reflection and renewal.

The special foods enjoyed on Clean Monday are a highlight of the celebration. The menu includes lagana, a flat, unleavened bread baked only for this day, as well as taramosalata (a creamy fish roe dip), dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves), and an array of fresh vegetables and olives. Seafood like octopus, shrimp, and calamari is also common, as it is permitted during Lent. For dessert, halva, a sweet semolina or tahini-based treat, is a must.

While Clean Monday is celebrated across Greece, experiencing it in Santorini adds a unique charm. Locals gather in scenic spots such as Profitis Ilias Hill, Vlychada Beach, or Oia’s open fields, launching their kites against the backdrop of the endless caldera blue. Whether in a family gathering or a quiet seaside picnic, the essence of Clean Monday in Santorini is one of freedom and a deep connection to both nature and tradition.

Clean Monday is more than just a fun-filled day outdoors; it carries the deeper meaning of renewal and preparation for the spiritual journey ahead. Whether you’re flying a kite, savoring Lenten delicacies, or simply embracing the calm of nature, the essence of the day remains the same—a moment to cleanse, reflect, and welcome the season of Lent with open hearts.

If you find yourself in Greece, or even better, in Santorini, during this time, don’t miss the chance to take part in these beautiful traditions!
